Papers, 1831-1873.

The collection contains two folders of correspondence, for the period 1831 to 1864, from Tenney's relatives throughout the country. They are primarily responses to an 1851 circular issued by Tenney requesting genealogical information. The letters include copies of wills, obituary notices, personal anecdotes, and newspaper clippings. The remaining folder includes printed circulars and certificates of membership, for the period 1847 to 1873. Tenney was a corresponding member of the Vermont, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire historical societies, as well as the New England Historic-Genealogical Society and the Washington National Monument Society. Octavo volumes one and two contain personal and professional correspondence to Tenney, from 1843 to 1852. They include numerous letters from former Dartmouth classmates and other colleagues who discuss such educational issues as teacher training, school systems, textbooks, etc. Edward Addison Lawrence (1824-1911), on 22 January 1852, compared educational attitudes he observed in his Rahway, N.J., school with those of New England. Tenney's brother, Andrew Pettengill Flanders (1834-1853), and sister, Judith Ann (1836-1858), often corresponded from their family home in West Concord, N.H., informing Tenney of family news and local events. John Ellis Tenney (1824-1858) wrote his brother from Worcester, Mass. He made a brief comment, on 18 October 1851, of the Women's Rights Convention held there. Octavo volume three contains numerous letters of recommendation and character references from Tenney, dating 1835 to 1873. There are also appreciative messages from friends, employers, and students, as well as job proposals and inquiries.
